Welcome to my blog.
In a way this is a living sketchbook of my process and how I got to some of the concepts that either made it or fell by the wayside. A behind-the-scenes look at how some of the video images were made. I find all the mistakes and smudges to be a lot more interesting than the polished and presentable stuff.
It's true. The sketch is the soul of the artwork.
First I was given a script, and I did a series of thumbnail sketches of what I felt were key scenes. When we determined the number and sequence of images throughout the script, it was then time to flesh the thumbnails out and sketch in more detail the overall look of each panel. These sketches were one of 3 concepts shown.
After doing thumbnail sketches, I explored 3 different concepts - and how I handled the relationship between the headline, copy and pictures.
At the point where the author mentions having a Mickey Mouse punching bag when he was a kid, I found reference and drew up one scenario. Later we determined for legal reasons it wasn't good to have Mickey in there, so we substituted a clown punching bag in the final images.
One of the deleted frames where I suggested a mountain climber. When you show certain subjects, you have to consider the limitations…if you show a woman some asks "hey, what about the men? we're ignoring half the potential market" and then you've limited yourself. The final video showed cute, somewhat anthropomorphic woodland creatures which everybody can appreciate. It tied in nicely with the author's roots in the Adirondacks.
